Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John Kerry fretted Sunday that the WikiLeaks disclosures could lead to the recall of some American ambassadors.
The Massachusetts Democrat said on NBC’s "Meet the Press" that the leaked cables could compromise some personal diplomatic relationships beyond repair. For instance, he noted, that some Germans have called for the return of the American ambassador there.
Host David Gregory asked Kerry whether he thinks some U.S. ambassadors will be removed because of the kerfuffle from disclosures in secret documents.
“I can’t tell you, but it’s possible that in some places people are going to say they can’t work with them,” Kerry said. “And they’ll say that quietly and behind the scenes.”
He specifically cited Yemen, where the cables reveal previously unknown cooperation between the country's president and the American government that could undermine his position at home.
Individual Social Security numbers and technology about roadside bombs are in the documents, he said.
“There is damage,” he said. “I don’t think it goes to the extent that some people have been saying -- but, yes, there is real damage.”
Kerry, a leading anti-war activist in the Vietnam era, rejected comparisons between WikiLeaks and the Pentagon Papers.
“This has no relationship to something like that,” he said. “This is voyeurism.”
