1000th Thang Long-Hanoi :Foreign media praises Hanoi’s millennium celebrations

 
Many foreign newspapers and media published photos and articles on Vietnam’s special cultural and artistic activities celebrating the millennial anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi.
Images of Hanoi splendid in red appeared in many foreign papers and news sites. China’s official news agency Xinhua reported on the 10-day celebrations of Thang Long-Hanoi, which included a parade, exhibitions, concerts and a firework display. The agency said the event bore the hallmarks of Vietnam’s socio-political life.
Over the past week, Cuban state television spent part of its evening news programme broadcasting Hanoi’s celebrations. The television channel gave Cubans a taste of the atmosphere in Hanoi during the preparations for the grand ceremony and underlined the friendliness, culture and politeness of Hanoians.
AFP reported that Vietnam put on its biggest-ever parade, involving tens of thousands of people, and Hanoi was decorated with red national and Party flags.
Meanwhile, the US’s AP described the thousands of Vietnamese people singing the national anthem to the sound of heavy guns at the start of the parade. In the streets, local people shouted, waved flags and took photos of the delegations as they passed.
AP quoted the speech made by President Nguyen Minh Triet saying that a millennium ago, King Ly Thai To made the strategic decision to move the capital from Hoa Lu north to Thang Long, now Hanoi, beginning a magnificent era for the Great Viet Kingdom. Despite its ups and downs over the years, Thang Long-Hanoi remains the heart of the whole nation.
Reuters cited the Guinness World representative, Beatriz Fernandez, as praising Hanoi’s Ceramic Path.
The New York Times remarked that Vietnam has become increasingly known to Americans. Some Arabic news websites also published articles complimenting Hanoi on its depth of history and rich culture, saying that Hanoi is an ideal destination for foreign tourists.
On its website, the ASEAN Tourism Association says that the 10-day celebrations of Thang Long-Hanoi and many related performances and exhibitions provided an excellent opportunity to promote Hanoi as well as Vietnam to the world.
Japan’s NHK covered Hanoi’s grand meeting and parade on October 10, quoting President Triet as stating that Vietnam is determined to turn its capital city into a modern one.
According to NHK, the 1000th anniversary attracted the attention of a large number of Vietnamese people across the country. Many from rural areas travelled to Hanoi to witness the grand ceremony. Many of them stayed up late to be able to view the parade the following morning.
Japan’s news agency Jiji featured the festive atmosphere in Hanoi over these days. It said the streets were full of red banners and national flags as well as girls wearing traditional ao dai and young people with national flags painted on their faces.
Yasuura, a Japanese photographer, said he felt that Hanoi is full of development potential and is changing day by day. He remarked that despite its quick growth, Hanoi still keeps its ancient features. He added that he was very impressed by Vietnam’s multilateral foreign policy when seeing many foreigners who had come from different countries to attend the celebrations of Thang Long-Hanoi.
